Do you know the Portuguese guitar?

Portuguese guitar comes after the west European zither, a very popular instrument with many different models during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries. Only a few of these models survived until the XIX century, being one of them, the Portuguese guitar. This instrument popularity fell from enlightened and refined to be only played by tramps at taverns in the middle of the XVIII century. In the beginning of XIX century, with the new tendency of Fado as national music, the Portuguese guitar reborned becaming very appreciated by the young university students at the time.

The Portuguese guitar has a pear shape and six pairs of strings. The material used to build it is lignum vitae, acer and mahogany for the sides and bottom. Pine and spruce wood for the cover.
