Cork`s significance - Alentejo

Discovering the Cork`s significance!

Quercus Suber, or cork oak, one of the most significant and idyllic species of trees in Portugal. Being it’s habitat mainly the south of our country, we can see them at Alentejo’s south-west and vicentine coast natural park, where they are also known as chaparro. A specie who grows healthy even in very pour sandy soil, having no need for artificial watering or major cares. From this trees we collect cork, considered by many people, the best natural isolator known by man. The cork oak’s log is also used as fuel and its fruit, the acorn, for animal feeding. That´s a very important tree, even to our economy, being Portugal de biggest exporter of cork around the world. Beside the bottle stoppers, interior pavement and isolation applications, used since ever, the technologic developments on cork processing, brought new tendencies with this product, such as, different kind of accessories, tools and clothes which quickly became very appreciated.
